Irregular Simple Future Form

Irregular Simple Future Form

Buenos días chicos,

In the last class, we learnt Future tense with regular verbs. I hope all of you have memorised the ending (formulae) for verb conjugation in future tense.

Today we are going to discuss about future tense with irregular verbs.

Before we start with today's topic, let's take a quick recap of future tense with regular verbs

Regular verbs in the future tense are conjugated by adding the following endings to the infinitive form of the verb:

-é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án.

  ej:
I shall write the letter next week.
Yo escribiré la carta la próxima semana.

       I will eat
      Yo comeré

      Alejandro will study with me.
      Alejandro estudiará conmigo.

[ Note : We use the same ending for irregular verbs ]

Now Let's start today's topic

Irregular Simple Future Form

The simple future has relatively few irregular verbs, and they fall into three distinct categories:
  • those that drop the e or i from the infinitive ending and add a d
  • those that simply drop the e or i from the infinitive ending
  • those that don't follow any predictable pattern and must simply be memorized

Forms that Drop the e or i from the Infinitive Ending and Add a d

Only -er and -ir verbs fall into this category. To form the future with verbs in this category, simply remove the e or i from the infinitive ending, add a d, then add the simple future endings.

Conjugation Example: Tener ( to have)

SubjectVerb Conjugations

ej : Tendrè una casa de mi sueño - I will have a dream house.

Forms that Drop the e or i from the Infinitive Ending

Only -er verbs fall into this category. To form the future with verbs in this category, simply remove the e or i from the infinitive ending, then add the simple future endings.

Irregular stems

The verbs decir (to say) and  hacer (to make/to do) have irregular stems that must be memorized. Verbs that have either of these two verbs as their root, such as
predecir (to predict) and rehacer (to redo), follow the same conjugation patters as decir and hacer in the simple future.

Conjugation Examples: Decir and Hacer

Diréis el cuento de tu viaje a Argentina.
You will tell your story of your trip to Argentina.

Ellos harán el pastel para mi mamá.
They will make the cake for Mom.

There are twelve common verbs that are irregular in the future tense. Their endings are regular, but their stems change. Since the endings are the same as all other future tense verbs, we show only the “yo” form, and have underlined the irregular stem. We have also grouped them according to their patterns of change.
